Facebook has a myriad of security options that can protect
you or your business from unwanted sharing. A user can control who sees certain
posts, advanced profile information. It is also possible to control what posts
are photos and information is available to the public. Users can also control
who can send them messages (i.e. limited messages to friends, friends of
friends, or only yourself). Facebook users can also adjust what information is accessible
by search engines (i.e. what part of your time line can be search by anyone on
the internet).
Social media is a great tool for networking, but it is
always important to consider that the accidental sharing of certain information
with particular clients or individuals could be detrimental to the image of the
company or individual. Restricting the amount of information available via
social media is important to protect the business. Just because social media
allows for easy networking doesn’t mean every aspect of the business is intended
to become public.
When considering what privacy settings I would choose to use
on personal or professional web pages I like to remain cautious with the
information I share. This is especially true when considering a personal
Facebook page. It is possible to utilize Facebook simply as a tool to study and
know others better. You don’t necessarily have to share—or show anything about
yourself. This is the approach I would take. The idea of people I don’t know
well knowing much about me makes me uncomfortable. Regarding a business I would
use Facebook as a tool to share information. Utilize Facebook for all IMC (integrated
marketing communications); but, do not share overmuch.
