Facebook: Maintaining Privacy in the Era of Personal Transparency

Facebook has a myriad of security options that can protect you or your business from unwanted sharing. A user can control who sees certain posts, advanced profile information. It is also possible to control what posts are photos and information is available to the public. Users can also control who can send them messages (i.e. limited messages to friends, friends of friends, or only yourself). Facebook users can also adjust what information is accessible by search engines (i.e. what part of your time line can be search by anyone on the internet).

Social media is a great tool for networking, but it is always important to consider that the accidental sharing of certain information with particular clients or individuals could be detrimental to the image of the company or individual. Restricting the amount of information available via social media is important to protect the business. Just because social media allows for easy networking doesn’t mean every aspect of the business is intended to become public.

When considering what privacy settings I would choose to use on personal or professional web pages I like to remain cautious with the information I share. This is especially true when considering a personal Facebook page. It is possible to utilize Facebook simply as a tool to study and know others better. You don’t necessarily have to share—or show anything about yourself. This is the approach I would take. The idea of people I don’t know well knowing much about me makes me uncomfortable. Regarding a business I would use Facebook as a tool to share information. Utilize Facebook for all IMC (integrated marketing communications); but, do not share overmuch.

Thoughts Regarding the Twitterverse

Twitter (as many of us know) is a microblogging social media platform. It allows for a quick glimpse into the lives of those you choose to follow. It also allows users to follow your tweets as well. Twitter allows users to answer a simple question. What are you up to? Being limited to only 140 characters tweets are short allowing for easier reading that some traditional blogs. In hustle and bustle of the world today saving time is king. For those of you waiting on the edge of your seat….YES Bear Brewing Company is on twitter! @BearBrewingCo.
Twitter offers a great opportunity for businesses to network quickly and spread the word about their products. Using Twitter during live events can also help coordinate and people about what is going on. Any business (in my humble opinion) would be remiss not to sue Twitter, and link it with as many relevant social mediums as possible. How often today are we ever truly not in touch with our social media? Think…how often are we really away from either PC or smartphone nowadays? Now, now Twitter isn’t all gum drops and rainbows, there is a learning curve like with all things, and using it right is paramount to its effectiveness. I recommend reading up on the Twitterverse before implementing it in your business plan. Also find a good teacher. Finding someone that is a pro at Twitter and other social media is often the most efficient way to learn.
Possible Tweet Ideas:
Engage: this style denotes using questions or bold statements to draw in followers.
Ex: What type of delicious craft beer will be our next Seasonal beer? Click here to vote on Facebook (this also offers a tie in to other social media)
Entertain: It’s all in the name. Do something interesting to grab the attention of the Twitterverse. I like using a joke or riddle.
Ex: There’s this unusual little bar, where you can get a free beer if you know the secret code.

The secret code works like this: You sit down at the bar. The bartender tells you a number. And you tell him another number. If it's right, you get a free beer.

For example, a customer goes up to the bar and the bartender says, "6." The customer says, "3," and he gets his free beer.

The second fellow goes up to the bar, and the bartender says, "12." The customer says, "6," and he gets his free beer!

A third customer sits at the bar, and the bartender says, "14." The customer says, "8." He gets a free beer.

You're sitting there. The bartender turns to you and says, "22."

What do you say? Hint: The answer can be found @BearBrewingCo at twitter.com ;)
Inform: Tells followers something about your business. This can be about an upcoming promotion or event.
Ex: Bear Brewing Company is holding a free beer tasting on Friday September 20th at 7PM. Bring a friend!
Hash tags (#): The use of hash tags  can be used in twitter to tie together conversations in to a live streaming conversation. It allows everyone to see every tweet also using that hash tag.
Ex: Bear Brewing Company is holding a free beer tasting on Friday September 20th at 7PM. Bring a friend! Continue the conversation #BeerWithTheBear
Mentions: A mention on twitter is anything using the @xxxx Format in a tweet (including @replies) this allows you to “mention” someone’s twitter handle in a tweet thusly linking them with the conversation.
Ex:  @BeerAdvocate is promoting a flood fundraiser for Colorado through 9/19. Join the conversation #Colorado

Introducing the Bear Brewing Company

The Bear Brewing Company is a small microbrewery located in the beautiful St. Croix valley in western Wisconsin. I started Bear Brewing Company because I have a love for good craft beer and want to share my vision with everyone. We offer five always-on-tap beers as well as one rotating seasonal tap. This means that like the seasons, every few months the beer lineup changes accordingly.
If you have never had craft beer or don’t know much (or anything) about it that is no problem. Bear Brewing offers brewery tours 7 days a week. You can even get a special behind-the-scenes tour with me and really learn how the brewing process takes place. Regardless of your palate I am sure BBC has a beer for everyone out there.
As autumn approaches and the nights become cooler you can try Bear’s autumn porter; a dark beer that maintains smooth rich flavor and goes down easy with just enough body to keep you warm on those chilly autumn nights. Our beer embodies the natural and wild spirit that is the Midwest. Just remember if you are having a bear of a day our fine tasting beers are here to help.
